NHS Continuing Healthcare Links
First Published in June 2007, the National Framework provided for the first time a common methodology for local NHS bodies (Primary Care Trusts) to assess patient needs. The Framework defines an assessment methodology using 'Care Domains' and is designed to help healthcare professionals establish whether an individual has a primary health need. This is the key factor in deciding whether someone qualifies for NHS Funded Care. The Framework was updated in July 2009.
Produced by the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) and the Local Government Association (LGA) in October 2007, this document gives their view on the National Framework soon after it was published. This is well worth reading, especially if you are currently funded through Social Services (including Direct Payments) and want to move to NHS Funded Care. In this document both organisations say that it is unlawful for Social Services to fund care for health needs, re-iterate the importance of the Coughlan Case in establishing a precident for SCI People and confirm that if someone is entitled to NHS funding it should be for both their health and social care needs.

For some people the only problem with having your care funded by the NHS is the fact that you are unlikely to be able to directly employ your own staff. Personal Health Budgets may allow you to dio this and are being piloted in the Summer of 2010. This link takes you to the Personal Health Budgets page of the Dept of Health Website.
